A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide can put back on reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a prominent medical journal shows that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a return to starting mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
Scientists point out that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise typically see a less rapid weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Experts believe the way of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a intense resurgence of cravings.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not established sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females compared to males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
